Tai Dian was one of the four worthy ministers who submitted to the Western Count Ji Chang at the end of the Shang Dynasty. He assisted Ji Chang in governing Qi and helped establish the foundation of the Zhou Dynasty.

In myth — Investiture of the Gods · Classic of Mountains and Seas

Tai Dian was a divine martial general of Xiqi and the deputy general of Nangong Shi. When Ji Chang was imprisoned, he took heavy bribes to bribe Fei Zhong to rescue his lord. Later, he followed the Zhou army in campaigns and participated in major battles such as the bride-snatching. During a confrontation, he was burned by Zhao Sheng of Sanshan Pass.
